But there is a real cost to relying on someone elses platform." tags: - Small Business - Web Development - Website Tips published: false featured: false ---
Most small businesses in the UK start with a Facebook page. It is free, it is familiar, and it feels like enough. For a while, it probably is.
But there is a fundamental problem: Facebook owns your audience, not you. If your account gets flagged, restricted, or the algorithm changes, your reach drops overnight.
A website is yours. Nobody can take it away or change the rules on you.
There is also the trust gap to consider. When someone hears about your business and wants to check you out, they Google you. If nothing comes up, a chunk of those people quietly move on. A proper website with your services, contact details, and a few testimonials does a lot of the selling for you.
Facebook pages do not rank well in search results. Your website does. If someone searches plumber in Bristol or accountant near me, a well-built website gives you a real shot at showing up.
Here is the honest version: a Facebook page is a marketing channel. A website is your business home on the internet. Use both, but the website needs to exist first.
A five-page website with your services, some photos, a contact form, and your phone number is genuinely enough to make a difference. Once it is there, it works for you around the clock.
